A little girl Sujata was born and brought up in a middle class ,orthodox family in Howrah, who was very much devoted towards drawing and painting since childhood. From that very devotion, she started dreaming of becoming an artist. But due to lack of money, she didn’t receive proper guidance, but her dream of becoming a painter continues. At one point, she started to nurture her dream ,while also paying for her studies through tuition. In spite of her very good bank job, she used to draw and paint in her leisure hours. Paint and brush became a part and parcel of her life. But who will value the artistic entity in the midst of accounting? And why would they? That’s why Sujata used to receive mockery, sarcasm and insult. Her love and dedication for painting used to be blamed if any slight error in accounting was made by her. Although, it cannot be denied ,that artists are a little bit careless. They are little inattentive to their work,and their family .Thats why its very natural for artists to be get insulted.
In every place wherever Sujata worked, she would hear from people and her family,” You are not trained from any art college, then what kind of paintings do you do?”
After getting insulted and abused from her family and society, Sujata did not lose hope, she struggled more than ever. Seeing her indomitable determination, courage and enthusiasm , a group of good people stood by her side and helped her. With their inspiration , Sujata picked up her paint brush again. She realized that she could make her passion a profession. So, she started teaching drawing through “Sujata’s Ankan Pathsala”. Gradually, she started creating drawing students along with her own work and her journey begins.
Sujata was converted to Buddhism after she met a buddhist monk. And from there she found peace and self confidence and willpower in life. She learnt new painting styles— Stippling painting, Dot painting, and Tibetan art. Her opportunity came to showcase her talent. One of the greatest achievements of her life was— being able to paint a picture of the Tibetan religious leader , Dalai Lama and present it to him with her own hands.
Gradually, the victory came in the competition , Sujata’s name took place in the Awards & record She Received the Best Painting Master Award At The Dadasaheb Phalke Icon Award Ceremony Held In Kolkata This Year 2026 an event attended by numerous stars and ministers….Seeing her name in the
Limca Book of Records” Asia Book Of Record ,she became extreme emotional and her eyes were filled with tears. Then Sujata’s name appeared in the ” Guinness Book of World Records” on the 35 feet/ 5 feet dot painting. She received the honour of “Indian Book of Records”, received the “Ankan Ratna” honour from ” Notun Vorer Alo”; finally, she was given the honorary title of “Doctorate” for her drawing art and social work.
Sujata loved to do social work as well as to teach drawing. The children of the workers in a brick kiln in Howrah learn drawing from her for a very nominal amount. She celebrates her birthday by feeding the children of “Durbar”,a social organization for sex workers in Sonagachi, for a very nominal fee. Her popularity with those children is so high that they don’t like any other drawing teacher.
Keeping in mind “Serving Shiva is serving life”, Sujata serves Lord Shiva every year by donating food to those who walk to Tarakeswar with water pot on their shoulders during the month of Sravana and by applying ointment to the wounds on their feet with her own hands. Sujata realizes God through such social work at different times throughout the year.
Today, she can proudly say—-“I am an independent artist,” because her identity is made by her own hands. And in the path of her struggle, Arnab—Sujata’s present life partner suddenly came into her life, the one who encourages her at every moment stands by her side in good stead, believes in her talent. Finding a person like him is the highest achievement of Sujata’s life.
Today, Sujata doesn’t just paint, she says with every stroke of her brush ,”No one can suppress a woman’s dream.”Those who thought that life was over—– May they dream a new after seeing Sujata’s struggle.
Sujata’s struggle to become an artist proves one thing——“No matter how much society restricts and humiliates you , if the fire of artistic creation burns within you , then one day that fire will become light and dazzle everyone’s eyes.”
